No one can come to the Father except through me

“I am the way, the truth and the life. No one can come to the Father except through me.” Jesus in John 14:6. Probably one of the most offensive things Jesus ever said.
Lots of people have different ideas of how they can be saved – by being a good person, by helping out those in need, following a certain religion. And many don’t even believe they need to be saved at all. Which is what makes this comment from Jesus so offensive to so many. Because essentially He is saying that unless you follow Him, no matter what you do, no matter what you believe, it won’t be enough. It won’t save you.
Allah won’t save you.
Buddha can’t save you.
The Book of Mormon won’t get you into heaven.
Door-knocking won’t earn you salvation.
Good karma won’t be enough.
Being a good person won’t save you.
Going to church on Sundays isn’t enough.
The Prophet Mohammed can’t bring you to God.
Only Jesus is Truth. Only Jesus is the way to the Father. Only through what He did on the cross is anyone saved.
That’s a bold statement, with drastic consequences. For if we believe it to be true (and the Bible tells us that it is) then it must have a dramatic impact on our lives. For firstly, we must ensure that we are truly saved. We must ensure that we have put our faith in Jesus, and accepted that amazing thing He did for us on the cross, dying in our place and aren’t trying to earn our salvation in some other way. And secondly, it will impact in every way how we live our life. For if we believe that only those who accept Jesus as the way, the truth and the life are going to enter heaven then we are left with the unpleasant reality that all those who do not accept Jesus as the way, the truth and the life won’t enter heaven. They’ll be going to Hell.
And that is a view you’ll not hear expressed too much in Christian culture today, because it is deemed offensive by the outside world, so we tend to tone it done, emphasising God’s love and neglecting to mention the fact that non-believers are going to Hell. And so often you hear of people who say they are Christians, but that their faith is ‘a personal thing for them, not something they’ll share with others.’ Which seems to me a blatant contradiction. How can you believe that those who don’t accept Jesus as saviour will end up in Hell, and not want to try and do something about it? Not want to try and point people to Jesus? Not want to try and save them?
Because the thing is, at the heart of the Christian faith is the belief that salvation is purely by God’s grace, through faith in Jesus, made possible by his death on the cross. If you remove that you remove the very thing that makes the Good News good. Maybe it is time for us to stop the softy-softy approach. Maybe we need to stop worrying about who we offend, and get sharing the radical message that only Jesus can save out there. (Not ramming it down people’s throats, but not totally neglecting to mention it either.)
And maybe we need to spend time examining our own lives, making sure that we are fully aware and grateful of what Jesus did for us on the cross, and ensure that we are totally reliant on that alone to save us, not attaching any extra unnecessary strings.  And making sure that we don’t swallow the lie that you can get to heaven without Jesus, that we don’t need to share His message because people don’t need it. Jesus makes it very clear that they do. And He makes it clear that it is up to us to tell them. No one can come to the Father except through Jesus. Do our friends know that? Have we told them?

  • So this is a continuation of our current strand of articles focused on making All4God’s position in certain issues clear, felt it was important to emphasise the centrality of the cross to true Christianity seen as it gets neglected by certain groups (cough “Emergent Church” cough)
This could upset a few folk from other religions if they happen to read this, I guess I should expect a fatwa in the post…

  • John 14:6 states  “I am the way, the truth and the life. No one can come to the Father except through me” not John 14:7.   Just a heads up.

    • whoops! Thanks for pointing that out, fixed it now

He was not talking about Jesus the flesh, he was talking about the “son who was given” who was the CHRIST. “A child is born BUT a son was given”. God only had one son and he is called the “Christ” who was put into a virgin flesh body (Jesus). Who is and was the example for what you are to become.
You need to quit reading the bible out of the flesh mind. It can only be understood if you read it in the spirit or mind of Christ.

    • Yup, when reading the Bible it is always a good idea to pray and ask the Holy Spirit to help you understand it

So what about remote places in the world who, after Jesus’ death/resurrection (promise of salvation), never heard of Jesus? Do they go to hell out of ignorance? Are they judged differently?

    • God, being all powerful and all knowing and pure love, truth and righteousness, devises a way to offer every man an opportunity to seek and find him…even to the ends of the earth. Nature and the perfect engineering of its operational laws point to a magnificent Creator. All men’s hearts have been implanted with a curiosity about the existence of God. None shall die without being given the opportunity to choose. Young children are automatically saved. Disabled people will be saved by His grace if they do not have the capacity to choose for themselves. God is a God of grace and no man can comprehend His mind. Don’t worry about others untilyou have first saved yourself. See Romans 10:9; Ephisians 1:13; John 14:6.
Those who SEEK will FIND. KNOCK and it will be OPENED to you. ASK and you will RECEIVE.
      Use your Free Will wisely.
      God bless.

I agree with you but it is hard not to be jaded and exhausted. I feel like the majority of my energy is consumed in simple survival……………….I don’t even know where to go from here and my faith is great….just not in me.

God sent Jesus to deliver HIS message.
The Father is glorified through the Son.
None of the miracles Jesus performed would have been possible without God.
God sent Jesus so that we could be with Him (God) THROUGH Christ, not instead of.

  •  Well no offense but you grew up sayin that we are one nation under god.. with LIBERTY AND JUSTICE FOR ALL.. but you live in a nation where it is a right to worship, or not worship who ever you want….and liberty, justice? where people were forced into slavery, women were murdered for being left handed,(Salem) and the entire time, the men saying this pledge and defending their churches were raping the slaves. And now the United states constitution separates churches from state, soooo technically if this pledge were to be binding, the “religious” would not get so defensive about separation when it comes to taxes, and honor the liberty and justice for ALL..so yeah, it seems you are the only ones offended. The irony is that the bible tells Christians that statements like the one you just made are sins, and it shows how much you doubt Gods will. lest you forget what the bible says………………………………………………………….1 John 4:20  states, “If anyone says, I love God, yet hates his brother, he is a liar. For anyone who does not love his brother, whom he has seen, cannot love God, whom he has not seen.”……………………….And while christians are so quick to judge those equal in Gods eyes..yes you are the same…………………….Isa 53:6
All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned EVERY ONE to his own way; and the LORD hath laid on him the iniquity of us all. That means you. That means me. That means “every one.” That means, according to the Bible, God hates ALL, because ALL have been “workers of iniquity.” Are you with me so far?    and finally the bible clearly tells you it is a sin to use him to lead anyone to God but by Gods will, for no man shall come unto the lord but by his own free will. actually, your religion despises the Pledge of allegiance.  ……………
    Leviticus 26
“You shall not make idols for yourselves or erect an image or pillar, and you shall not set up a figured stone in your land to bow down to it, for I am the Lord your God. You shall keep my Sabbaths and reverence my sanctuary: I am the Lord. “If you walk in my statutes and observe my commandments and do them, then I will give you your rains in their season, and the land shall yield its increase, and the trees of the field shall yield their fruit. Your threshing shall last to the time of the grape harvest1 John 4:20  states, “If anyone says, I love God, yet hates his brother, he is a liar. • Read the bible.. do none of you trust in God? Do you think that homosexuals, and atheists are so much more powerful than God, that he wants your help? Everyone is a sinner… and many will go to Heaven,,most will not be rewarded there.. When you go out to tell YOUR lies not Gods. Anyone with a bible will know you desire to be a False Prophet.. And I wonder is the Internet closer to a synagogue or a street corner? when you pray, you must not be like the hypocrites; for they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners, that they may be seen by men.

    • I don’t desire to be a False Prophet!

No one can come to the Father except through me.”  I used to think that a person had to repeat a prayer and ask Jesus in to his heart and thats how you get saved but those exact words are not in the Bible are they ? I think a lot of people are saved that we don’t think they are because they did not do this . I believe Jesus is the door to the Father and The holy Spirit draws each person to that door in different ways .  And once you get to that door and believe that Jesus took your place on that cross your saved then you learn & grow in him !!!!!

    • Totally agree, it isn’t about praying the right words, but having true faith, faith expressed through love, faith made possible only by grace, not by anything we do
