“My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous..” 1 John 2:1
We all sin. None of us lives a perfect life. In some way all of us go against God’s will and try to do things our own way. We exchange the wisdom of God for the folly of man. But the good news for us when we do mess up is that we have an advocate. And not just any advocate. Jesus Christ is seated at the right hand of the Father, interceding for us. If we have put our faith in Him then when we do sin and fall short of God’s glory we have the comfort of knowing that Jesus’ righteousness covers us.
His righteousness pays in full the debt of our sin. He advocates for us when we sin, and reminds any who tries to bring charges against us that we have been justified because of the cross. The devil can no longer condemn us by bringing up our past or our failures, for we have an advocate who speaks up in our defence.
Jesus doesn’t just advocate our righteousness. He is seated at the right hand of the Father, interceding for us. In all circumstances He is praying for us. That is mind-blowing when we realised that Jesus, in whose name we have been taught to pray, is actually praying for us. He intercedes on our behalf. Jesus does not just sit back passively in heaven – He is watching over us, defending us, pleading our case and interceding for our needs.
