Devotions to help you live out your faith

Moving to where your feet can't touch the ground

In my last devotion I wrote about the need for us to move towards spiritual maturity (read it here first if you haven’t already), and today I’m going to continue where I left off. It is time to start going deeper.
“So let us stop going over the basic teachings about Christ again and again. Let us go on instead and become mature in our understanding. Surely we don’t need to start again with the fundamental importance of repenting from evil deeds and placing our faith in God. You don’t need further instruction about baptisms, the laying on of hands, the resurrection of the dead, and eternal judgment. And so, God willing, we will move forward to further understanding.” Hebrews 6:1-3
Hopefully you know the basics. Hopefully you know that God loves you so much that he sent his Son to die in your place and that only by trusting in Him and repenting of your sins can you be saved to experience life in all its fullness, followed by eternity with God our Father.
For most of us that’ll be something we have heard many, many times. We know God loves us, we know Jesus died for us, we know there is something in the Bible about how he wants us to live for him, but we are content with where we are. We are happy in our shallow end where we know our feet can touch the ground and we can grab onto the edge. We stick to what is familiar and safe. But maybe God is calling us to something more.
Stepping out in faith isn’t for us. We aren’t ready to start telling people about Jesus yet. God couldn’t use us yet, we aren’t ready. All great lies Satan fills our minds with.
Because the truth is, we have been called to step out in faith. On our own, we will never be ready to tell others about Jesus, but we are not alone. We have the power of the Holy Spirit in us, strengthening us, giving us the words to say. But first we need to open our mouths. And throughout the Bible and more recent times God makes a habit of using people who don’t feel ready – just look at Moses.
So maybe it is time for us to stop going over the same few things which we are so familiar with. To stop floating about in the shallow end and swim out deeper, to where our feet can’t touch the bottom. To where we have to let go of the edge. It is time for us to move away from the ‘basics of Christianity’ and start focusing on bigger issues. Like how we are going to live in light of what Jesus did for us. Like how we can bring light to the world. It is time for us to go deeper and stop wasting time going over stuff we already know when there is so much more for us to figure out. It is time to stop worrying about getting out of our depth when we follow a Saviour who not only walks on the water, but reaches out his hand to grab us if we start to sink (see Matthew 14:22-33).
So let us move forward, and go deeper. It is time to step out of your comfort zone and see how God can use you for greater things. Be on the lookout for opportunities to go deeper, to live for Jesus in a way that takes you away from the shallow end into the deep end where He is waiting for you.

  • Moving forward is really important to everyone not just to those who believe in God. Moving forward means, making a step forward and being prepared for new challenges that would come along the way. http://www.aaamovingquote.com
