“This is the message we have heard from him and proclaim to you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all. If we say we have fellowship with him while we walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin.” 1 John 1:5-7
There are only two ways to go through life – walking in darkness or walking in light. There is no middle ground. You can’t be part in the light and part in the dark. If we claim to be following Jesus but still walk in the dark, taking part in corrupt acts and practices then we are lying to ourselves.
We are called to walk in the light, following the example of Jesus. Maybe over the past year you have got off course. The start of a new year is a chance to reset, to reorientate and to get back on the right path, the straight and narrow path that leads to eternal life.
As we pray and fast we draw closer to Jesus. We press in deeper in relationship with Him. As we draw closer to Him the Holy Spirit work to transform us day by day more and more into the image of Jesus so that we can better walk in the light, as He is in the light. He is our example, the one we must follow. It can be so easy to go along with the crowd, to follow the herd on social media or to be swayed by what everyone is saying in our groupchat. But Jesus is the one we must follow. His is the only example we should always follow.
The process of being transformed more and more into the likeness of Jesus so that we can walk stepping firmly in the light is an ongoing one. It is a process that will not be completed until the return of Jesus. This side of heaven there will always be work to do. There will always be areas where we fall short and there will always be aspects of our life that the Holy Spirit will be at work in, refining and purifying us. No matter where you are at in your relationship with God, whether you have been following Him for many years or if this is all new to you, there will always be areas to gradually be transformed from one degree of glory to another as we become more and more like Jesus. As we start this year off through an intentional season of prayer and fasting examine yourself and take the opportunity to ensure you feet are firmly planted in the light of God’s love, walking in His ways. If you are not walking in the light take heart that the blood of Jesus can cleanse you and reset your steps to enable you to walk in the light today.
Reset your steps to walk in the light today. Ask Jesus to forgive any darkness in your life. Today is a great time to commit your life to Him if you never have before. Ask the Holy Spirit to show areas where you need to be transformed to become more like Jesus.
