“My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous..” 1 John 2:1

In Jesus we have someone who is on our side, someone who stands before the Father pleading our case. We don’t always get it right. We make mistakes. We do the things we know we shouldn’t. But we have hope, because Jesus didn’t come into the world to condemn the world but to save the world. He doesn’t stand before the Father condemning us but advocating for us.

On the cross Jesus paid the price for all our sins – past, present and future. He made the one complete and all sufficient sacrifice. When we put our faith in Jesus’ grace we receive His righteousness. It is freely gifted to us. And it means that when our enemy the devil tries to bring accusations against us we have Jesus advocating on our behalf, reminding us that the debt of our sin has been paid in full.

Jesus is advocating on our behalf to God the Father. He ensures that rather than looking at us as guilty sinners God looks at us as righteous sons and daughters, justified by the blood shed on the cross. We need to remember we have an advocate. We have someone who is speaking up in our defense. We don’t have to accept the accusations of the devil. We have an advocate, Jesus, who counters the allegations that we aren’t good enough, that we aren’t deserving or that we are beyond hope. Our advocate reminds us that though we do sin and despite the fact that in and of ourselves we aren’t worthy, we are loved – so loved that He laid down His life in our place so that we could receive grace and mercy.

We have an advocate who silences the lies of the enemy. We have an advocate who reminds us we are loved. We have an advocate who reminds us just how much God cares about us. When the enemy tries to remind you of your past failures remember we have an advocate who has already paid in full the price for our sin. Be intentional today in choosing to listen to the voice of our advocate rather than the devil’s accusations and lies.
